As I sat down to write this article, I couldn’t help but think about the irony of the situation. Here I am, a journalist, writing about the impact of artificial intelligence on the very platform that has democratized access to information - Wikipedia. The online encyclopedia has been a staple of the internet for over two decades, providing a wealth of knowledge to anyone with an internet connection.
But with the rise of AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, the question on everyone’s mind is: what does the future hold for Wikipedia? Will it be able to adapt to the changing landscape of information dissemination, or will it become a relic of the past?
The Rise of AI-Generated Content
The launch of ChatGPT has sent shockwaves through the online community, with many hailing it as a revolutionary tool that can generate human-like content with ease. But for Wikipedia, this poses a significant challenge. Miguel Ángel García, a Wikimedia Spain partner and former board member, has already seen the impact of AI-generated content on Wikipedia. “We have noticed that new editors appear who want to add content. And they add very extensive and highly developed content, which is unusual. Because when you are a volunteer starting out, you build the articles little by little. You go paragraph by paragraph.”
The Community Strikes Back
But Wikipedia is not one to shy away from a challenge. The community of volunteers has always been the backbone of the platform, and they are determined to keep it that way. Chris Albon, director of Machine Learning at the Wikimedia Foundation, points out that the key to controlling inappropriate texts lies precisely in the community of volunteers, who moderate the content.
“In this new era of artificial intelligence, the strength of this human-led model of content moderation is more relevant. Wikipedia’s model, based on debate, consensus, and strict rules for citing sources, has proven resilient in maintaining content quality over the past two decades,” says Albon.
The Future of Wikipedia
So what does the future hold for Wikipedia? Will it be able to adapt to the changing landscape of information dissemination, or will it become a relic of the past? The answer lies in the community of volunteers who have always been the driving force behind the platform.
As García points out, the biggest risk for Wikipedia comes from outside of Wikipedia. The platform relies on secondary sources, and if these sources become unreliable, the entire ecosystem is at risk. But with the community of volunteers working tirelessly to maintain the quality of content, Wikipedia is well-equipped to face the challenges of the future.
The battle to stay relevant in the age of AI is far from over, but one thing is certain - Wikipedia will continue to be a beacon of knowledge and information for generations to come.
