The Rise of AI Bots in Social Media
Artificial intelligence (AI) bots have seamlessly integrated into social media platforms, blurring the lines between human and machine interaction. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Notre Dame sheds light on the challenges users face in identifying AI bots during political discourse.
The experiment involved human participants engaging with AI bots based on large language models (LLMs) on a customized instance of Mastodon, a social networking platform. Despite knowing they were interacting with both humans and AI bots, participants struggled to discern the true nature of the accounts. In fact, 58% of the time, they misidentified the AI bots.
Paul Brenner, a faculty member at Notre Dame, highlighted the deceptive nature of these AI bots. He emphasized that the bots’ ability to disseminate misinformation undetected poses a significant threat, as human users are often unable to distinguish between AI-generated content and authentic human input.
The study utilized various LLM-based AI models, including GPT-4 from OpenAI, Llama-2-Chat from Meta, and Claude 2 from Anthropic. Each AI bot was equipped with distinct personas and tasked with commenting on global events with a focus on spreading misinformation.
Interestingly, the study revealed that the specific LLM platform used had minimal impact on participants’ ability to identify AI bots. Even smaller models like Llama-2 proved challenging to differentiate in casual social media interactions.
The success of certain personas, particularly those characterized as organized females with strategic thinking abilities, underscored the bots’ proficiency in manipulating social media discourse. These findings suggest that AI bots designed to spread misinformation excel at deceiving users about their true identity.
Looking ahead, Brenner advocates for a multi-faceted approach to combatting AI-driven misinformation. He emphasizes the need for educational initiatives, legislative measures, and enhanced social media validation protocols to mitigate the spread of false information.
As the research team prepares for future investigations into the impact of LLM-based AI models on mental health, they invite more participants to engage in upcoming experiments. The study, titled ‘LLMs Among Us: Generative AI Participating in Digital Discourse,’ will be presented at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence 2024 Spring Symposium.
