Global Telco AI Alliance Announces Joint Venture for Large Language Model Development
The Global Telco AI Alliance, comprising SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, e&, Singtel, and SoftBank, convened in Barcelona to strategize the future of Large Language Models (LLMs) tailored for the telecommunications sector. The alliance aims to enhance customer interactions through digital assistants and chatbots by developing multilingual LLMs optimized for various languages.
Last year, SK Telecom invested $100 million in Anthropic to co-create an AI model for the telecom industry. The alliance has now decided to establish a joint venture to create telco-specific LLMs, emphasizing efficiency and reduced energy consumption compared to generic AI solutions.
Key executives including SKT’s chairman Chey Tae-won, Deutsche Telekom’s CEO Tim Hüttges, e& Group’s CEO Hatem Dowidar, Singtel’s Group CEO Yuen Kuan Moon, and SoftBank’s CISO Tadashi Iida were present at the meeting.
The alliance members highlighted the importance of tailored LLMs for telecom operators, citing improved understanding of user intent and quicker deployment. By leveraging customer service data, the LLMs are being fine-tuned to address telco-specific queries effectively.
