Nigeria Takes a Giant Leap in AI Development

As I reflect on the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, I am reminded of the immense potential it holds for transforming economies and societies. In Africa, one country is taking a bold step forward in harnessing the power of AI – Nigeria.

Recently, the Nigerian government launched the country’s first multilingual large language model (LLM), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s AI development journey. This innovative project is the result of a collaborative effort between various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Nigerian AI firm Awarritech, global tech company DataDotOrg, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR).

“The LLM will be trained in five low-resource languages and accented English to ensure stronger language representation in existing data sets for the development of artificial intelligence solutions.” - Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Communications Minister

This ambitious project aims to develop AI solutions that cater to the unique needs of Nigeria and the African continent. By leveraging the power of AI, Nigeria can unlock new opportunities for economic growth, improve healthcare, and enhance education, among other benefits.

The launch of the LLM is just one aspect of Nigeria’s broader AI strategy, which has received $3.5 million in seed funding from various partners, including UNDP, UNESCO, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Luminate, Lagos Business School, Data Science Nigeria, NITDA, and other agencies under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

During a recent workshop, the Minister of Communications, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced the relaunch of NCAIR, a dedicated entity created to promote research and development in AI, robotics, UAV, and Internet of Things (IoT) and their practical applications in Nigeria’s key sectors.
