China’s Zhipu AI Developing Sora-Like Technology for AGI
Beijing Zhipu Huazhang Technology Co (Zhipu AI) is making waves in the AI world with its latest development in Sora-like technology, aiming to pave the way for artificial general intelligence (AGI). This move underscores China’s determination to bridge the gap with the US in AI advancements.
Sora: A Game-Changer in Text-to-Video Generation
Sora, the text-to-video generator by OpenAI, is set to go public later this year, sparking a surge of interest in China. With Sora’s imminent release, Chinese companies are intensifying their efforts to match the recent progress made by US counterparts.
“About the advent of Sora, first we’re not surprised, second we’re also working on [similar technology],” mentioned Zhang Peng, the CEO of Zhipu AI.
Zhipu’s Rise and Vision
Zhipu, a pioneering Chinese firm in large language models (LLMs), was founded in 2019 by computer science research fellows from Tsinghua University. Backed by major tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent, Zhipu raised a substantial $342 million last October.
Last March, Zhipu unveiled ChatGLM as its answer to ChatGPT, becoming one of the first generative AI services approved for public use in China. Despite strict regulations on AI services in Beijing, Zhipu continues to push boundaries and eye global expansion.
Future Collaborations and Global Aspirations
Zhang expressed optimism about collaborating with foreign firms on AI technologies, emphasizing the importance of going global for a Chinese company. He envisions overseas markets as a crucial milestone for Zhipu’s growth.
