AMD Acquires European AI Lab Silo AI to Boost AI Solutions
AMD, the chip designer, has announced a deal to acquire Silo AI, a European AI lab and open-source large language model developer, for $665 million in cash. This acquisition marks a significant step in AMD’s strategy to deliver end-to-end AI solutions based on open standards and in partnership with the global AI ecosystem.
AI innovation drives market growth
As AMD increases its investments in AI and releases accelerate chips at a faster cadence, the company aims to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the AI computing market. Forrest Norrod, AMD’s top data center executive, stated that AMD is “dramatically” increasing its investments in AI to keep up with the rapid pace of innovation.
“The AI market is moving so fast that you have to invest in multiple areas to stay ahead,” Norrod said in a recent interview.
Silo AI, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, employs world-class AI scientists and engineers with extensive experience in developing tailored AI models, platforms, and solutions for leading enterprises. The lab’s offerings include open-source multilingual large language models that run on AMD platforms, as well as its own SiloGen model platform.
LLMs built on AMD platforms
Peter Sarlin, Silo AI’s CEO and co-founder, will continue to lead the lab’s team and report to Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group. Boppana stated that the acquisition will help enterprises develop and deploy AI solutions faster and more effectively.
“Silo AI’s team of trusted AI experts and proven experience developing leadership AI models and solutions will further accelerate our AI strategy and advance the build-out and rapid implementation of AI solutions for our global customers,” Boppana said.
Silo AI’s customers include major corporations like Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever, which benefit from the lab’s end-to-end AI-driven solutions that integrate AI quickly and easily into their products, services, and operations.
Integrating AI into products and services
With this acquisition, AMD reinforces its commitment to delivering AI solutions based on open standards and in partnership with the global AI ecosystem. As the company continues to invest in AI and release accelerate chips at a faster cadence, it is clear that AMD is determined to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the AI computing market.
The future of AI computing
“We have a well-established history of building successful AI products and delivering value to our customers. We look forward to becoming part of AMD to further scale our impact and develop enterprise solutions and AI models that address the most complex challenges with deploying AI at scale today,” Sarlin said.
